Leo
Leo's Story
Originally from Joplin, MO, Leo began his care journey in Kansas City before transferring to Ranken Jordan Pediatric Bridge Hospital, where he has been building strength and developing the skills he needs to go home.
Since coming to Ranken Jordan, Leo has made remarkable progress through speech, occupational, and physical therapy. His mobility has improved dramatically over the years: on Halloween 2022, he participated in the hospital’s costume parade in a wheelchair. The following year, he used a walker. Another year later, Leo achieved something truly special—he walked the parade route independently.
Leo enjoys participating in OZ (Optimization Zone), where he has had the chance to engage in activities that help him build social skills and experience childhood in ways he missed during long hospital stays.
One of Leo’s biggest joys is music. Whether it’s clapping along to a song, playing instruments during music therapy, or dancing in his own way, music always brings out his brightest smiles. It has been a powerful part of his therapy and a source of happiness during his time at Ranken Jordan.
Donor support is crucial to the total care Leo receives. Our Care Beyond the Bedside® approach to care is so much more than medical treatment, therapy and rehabilitation. We incorporate play into every aspect of healing at Ranken Jordan, and we are always thinking of new ways to bring play to patients like Leo. While play is essential to childhood, it is not reimbursable. Donors provide the resources needed to provide the optimal patient experience including patient play associates, music therapy, child life experts, and more.
Through the specialized care and donor-supported programs at Ranken Jordan, Leo continues to grow stronger, develop new skills, and enjoy a happy, joy-filled childhood despite his medical challenges.
