Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT)?
Constraint Induced Movement Therapy (CIMT) helps children and young adults who have limited use of one side of their body due to conditions such as cerebral palsy, stroke, head injury and brachial plexus injury.
CIMT improves the quality and amount of movement of a patient’s affected arm and hand for daily activities. Research has shown this exciting therapy approach can help the brain “rewire” itself. The Ranken Jordan team puts a cast on the stronger arm so the child must use the weaker arm, which in turn builds strength and improve function.
Research shows CIMT is most beneficial for children:
- With limited use of their arm and hand during activities such as play, self-care and feeding;
- At least 18 months old;
- At least 1 year out from injury causing decreased use of arm;
- With some use of their affected arm or hand; and
- With the ability to follow directions and maintain attention for at least 15 minutes.
