Every holiday at Ranken Jordan, we are reminded of one somber reality — not everyone can to be home to celebrate with loved ones. Our hospitalized patients and frontline workers know that fact all too well. Thankfully, this hospital has always been one that challenges norms and makes the best of every situation.
Each Thanksgiving, our cook, Tony, and the other amazing individuals on our dietary team lead an opportunity for patients, families, and staff to have a sit-down meal together on the holiday. The planning of such an event requires the joint effort of patient experience, dietitians, maintenance, and nursing. From tables provided by facilities, to turkey center pieces handmade by Cindy the receptionist, Tony explains that it’s a feat of collaborative teamwork because “everybody having a stake in it makes it a better thing!”
"Who wants to be in a hospital away from their families to begin with?" - Tony
In previous years, families were provided a grab-and-go style meal. Now, Tony emphasizes the community element. The large dinning-hall style tables ensure that even if a child’s caregivers are unable to be present, they can still enjoy time together by connecting with the larger community. “What kid wants to eat alone?” Tony responds when asked why that change matters to him.
This Thanksgiving, we express gratitude for all the members of the healthcare community who regularly step up to go the extra mile for patients on the holidays. We are especially thankful to Tony and all the members of our staff who selflessly and generously care for the children of Ranken Jordan. Reflecting on this beautiful tradition, Tony states, “It takes all of us to this. I want to be the person that brings us all together, even if it’s just for a short amount of time.”
We cannot imagine a better way to celebrate the holiday season!
